Ye Kyaw Thu, known in Japan as Ye-san, is a Visiting Professor with the Language & Semantic Technology Research Team (LST) at the Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (AINRU), National Electronic & Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), Thailand. He is also the founder of the Language Understanding Lab in Myanmar. He actively co-supervises and supervises undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from several universities. These include Assumption University (AU), Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT), Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Kasetsart University (KU), and Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT).
Previously, he was an Affiliate Professor at the Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT) in Cambodia from 2022 to 2023. Prior to that, he served as a Visiting Researcher at the Language and Speech Science Research Lab at Waseda University, Japan, from 2012 to 2021. He was also a Researcher in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab at Okayama Prefectural University (OPU), Japan, between 2016 and 2018. Additionally, he contributed as a Researcher at the Multilingual Translation Lab at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan, from 2012 to 2016. His earlier role was as a Research Associate at Waseda University, Japan, from 2009 to 2012.
He received his B.Sc. in Physics from Dagon University, Myanmar, and his M.Sc. and D.Sc. in global information and telecommunication studies from Waseda University, Japan. His research interests are in the fields of AI, natural language processing (NLP), and human-computer interaction (HCI). His experience encompasses research and development of text input methods, corpus building, machine translation, automatic speech recognition (ASR), and text-to-speech (TTS) engines for his native language, Myanmar. In the past, he delved into robot language acquisition. Currently, he is focusing on NLP R&D for the languages of Myanmar, sign language processing, Braille transcription, and ICT in primary education.
